Mailman is OK. This situation is similar to our last try. When I tried
to connect myself via telnet to golug.org port 25, there was a long
delay before a connection was established.

With the thousands of mailing lists Gmane interacts with, they feel
they need a quicker response time from mail servers to avoid their system
from being bogged down with active sessions.

The setup process is automated. It is run by Lars Ingebrigtsen in his
free time, which is split among a lot of Free Software projects.

Help is handled though the gmane.discuss news group. This seems to be
gatewayed from the gmane-discuss at quimby.gnu.org mailing list, but I
don't know a way of subscribing directly to the list.

But they are unlikely to be open to making exceptions.

I suspect Steve did, in the long past history.
