[GoLUG] LOL, people wonder why I don't like the Gnome project

I built a new computer in late 2020 with an AMD video card and I wanted to see how well it worked. I was interested if Wayland really worked and without the flickering when logging in. I was pleasantly surprised by how well it worked and how seamless it was. Performance is good and it is rock-solid stable.

I run the X-Plane flight simulator in full screen mode on a widescreen monitor and I get decent frame rates with a modest card (RX5500). No problems running on Wayland.

Actually cut-and-paste mostly works but KeePassXC won’t auto-type. I’m assuming that is an X11 vs Wayland issue.

In the 2-3 years since I switched I have not needed to switch back to X11 because something didn’t work on Wayland. I have gone back to Cinnamon a few times for a day or two just because but then I find I prefer GNOME.

I remember when GNOME 3 first came out I tried it and and hated the new interface. I went to Cinnamon because I saw it as the best of both worlds; modern GTK3 based but with a “classic” interface.

Now, I appreciate the clean look of GNOME 3. I personally hate icons on the desktop for example. So it works well for me.
