I personally think the cell phone has ruined society, but if we look
past that...

As a guy who writes books, I don't think a laptop is good for serious
work either, and most people use a laptop for serious work. So let me
ask this:

Imagine dictating a document while taking a walk. A modern smart phone
can speech to text with amazingly accuracy if you pronounce words
remotely correctly and don't mumble. Then you get home, plug in your
usb3 hub bringing in a full sized keyboard and monitor and perhaps a
larger usb hard drive for stuff you're not currently working on.

On your home setup, which is a lot better than a laptop in every
respect, you do the corrections on what you dictated. "Corrections
include turning things you spoke like "quote" and "unquote", or "h2"
and "unh2" to their correct HTML tags, or something similar in Markdown
or TeX or LaTeX. You could use a spellchecker and make a script to do
the conversions.

You could trivially make a VimOutliner outline with words "newline"
"tab", "tabtab", "tabtabtab", "tabtabtabtab" etc, and use Vim to
convert it to a tab indented outline. Let me coin a buzzword: "Just in
time authoring".

I might give this a try myself.
