I was in the business throughout the 80's and 90's, and there was
absolutely no meritocracy. I saw my older friends get laid off and
never re-hired because they were old, not because they were unskilled
or unproductive. And your paycheck wasn't tied to your productivity, it
was tied to how willing you were to walk out the door if they didn't
give you more money.
