Correction: Sony v. Universal Studios
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sony_Corp._of_America_v._Universal_City_Studios,_Inc.
The case primarily dealt with the concept of "time-shifting", i.e. using
personal recording devices to record a copyrighted broadcast to play
back later at personal convenience. The concept of "fair use" was
clarified as including time-shifting.
If you can find the transcript of the arguments, it is very interesting.
Many of the copyright concepts we still argue about today
(space-shifting, personal distribution, personal librarying, etc.) are
covered. This was in 1983 with analog recordings and broadcasts.
