Scripting, m'lad, is your friend.

SVLUG's mailing list archive is a lot better than that, and, at one
point, I extended its coverage back to 1997 when I realised we still had
the prior _majordomo_ mailing list's mbox, cleverly caveman-welded 
copies of the two mboxes together with "cat", and test-regenerated the
archive using /var/lib/mailman/bin/arch .  Other than those accursed
message-body "From " lines getting misparsed and needing to get tracked
down and individually munged, it was smooth sailing.

Your chosen job is a bit more complex because you'll need to massage a
big pile of not-quite-mbox into mbox, but if you can script it, then 
Size Doesn't Matter.
