If you look at the headers I showed, you will see that all the mail
address got made into gmane.org ones.  This is done to protect the
privacy of people on the list when seen from the news side.  Readers
can't directly contact people on the list, only reply to the news group,
where the addresses get fixed back before being mailed to the list
address.

To post or reply to the news group requires the user to be subscribed to
the list.  On your first message to the news group you are emailed
instructions for registering on the mailing list.  You then reply to the
email to confirm when you are on the list.  Only then is it sent
out. You message will only show up in the news group if it is
successfully mailed back out to the list.  This avoid some issues with
trolls.

My news/mail setup is emacs/gnus --nmh.  Gnus allows copying selected news
messages to a MH formatted folder.  Then nmh can pack the folder into
a mbox (or a mmdf) file.

I'm not sure how Emacs would behave with 19078 messages selected, since
it does most of its work in memory, but I have done things looking
at 1000 messages at a time.
