Well curiosity got the best of me and went ahead and tried it.

I marked all the messages in the news group unread, and then entering it,
I had 19078 message lines in my Emacs buffer. I could look at random
posts without problems. Then I selected all the messages and told Emacs
to copy them into a new mail folder.

Emacs was quiet after that, and would not respond. I could see in a
terminal window the messages showing up one at a time in the folder.
Emacs is unfortunately single threaded.

7 hours later, Emacs came back to show all the messages in the group
saved, and I had a new mail folder with 19078 messages in it, taking
up 164M of disk space. I then packed it in a 124M mbox file, which
gziped into 27M.

During the process Emacs consumed about 80% of one of my CPUs and had a
resident size that stayed stable around its normal size of about 234M.

I could use MH to read messages already downloaded and sample messages
as they came in, with familiar names attached. For example there was a
discussion in 2007 on the GPL that Andy Stetzinger began which is the
heart of what Red Hat is currently doing.
