It’s funny, but I ran into the same problem in Thunderbird, except my
service provider runs dovecot, and the problem occurred on one machine
but not on the other.  I eventually gave up and copied the Thunderbird
profile folder from the other machine.

Given the choice, I use Mutt with IMAP, and I only need the fancy GUIs
for things like search.
